The big inflated balloon animals passing through the streets (Russell Lee, 1938)

The big inflated balloon animals passing through the streets
National Rice Festival, Crowley, LA, 1938

This photo was taken by Russell Lee in 1938 at the National Rice Festival in Crowley, Louisiana for the Farm Security Administration.

The building on left was Joe's Place. The building in the background on right was the Acadia Theatre.

According to Michelle Meaux Hopkins, "My mother Amelia Scalco Meaux, my aunt Rosalie Scalco Landry and their first cousin Gloria Lusco Faulk are standing on the overhang. This was in front of my grandparent's cafe, Joe’s Place.  My grandparents Giuseppe “Joe” Scalco and Sarah Ragusa Scalco along with cousin Sarah Lusco Grado are standing on the ground.  My grandfather Joe is in front of the cafe with the white apron on. The two women in waitress uniforms are my grandmother Sarah Scalco and cousin Sarah Lusco Grado."1
